Oldest boy turns 12

12/6/2019

My oldest boy turned 12 this week!

He requested his favorite foods for his birthday, so we enjoyed: pancakes for breakfast, cheesy noodles for lunch, better with butter chicken and fake potatoes, and of course birthday cake for dessert!

Because we had a crazy schedule on his birthday, we carried it over to the next day as well. He had his favorite hashbrowns for his second birthday breakfast!

Grandma K in Wisconsin mailed him his gift and then we skyped with her so she could watch him open it. He loves to create with Legos so this was a great gift for him.

He received a spy kit from Grandma R. He was really excited about this gift. He also received some fun slime from Aunt Karen and from his older sister.

Here he is getting ready to open a gift.
It's a big one. What could it be?

He received a drone and a spy pen.

He was excited to receive some Jonathan Park CDs (these are audio dramas, similar to audiobooks). He's enjoyed some of this series, but not quite all of them yet.

This year for each of the kids' birthdays, we went to Build-a-Bear for them to create a birthday bear. His bear is an Air Force bear wearing dress blues and named Monty.

A few highlights from this boy's life this year:
He took his first airplane ride;
He went hunting with Grandpa K (for turkey and deer);
He listened to over 400 hours of audiobooks;
He's started attending BSF (Bible Study Fellowship) with Mom (and the younger siblings) so we're studying the book of Acts together

12 years old! Not a child but not an adult.
Happy birthday, son!

11 Year Old Boy

10/14/2019

This boy of mine.
I don't get many pictures of him.
He's very active and very outdoorsy.

He's 11 years old.

He tends to be one of the shorter kids his age, though just recently we're hearing comments from others that they see him shooting upward. My husband was also the shortest in his class for many years and then shot up to just under 6 foot. I think it's coming soon for this kid!

11 years old looks like goofing around on the tortoise statue at the zoo.

11 years old looks like bike rides and scooter rides around the neighborhood.

11 years old looks like being a big brother to the little ones.

11 years old looks like loving gym class at our homeschool co-op.

11 years old looks like helping when it comes to decorating the house for a sibling's birthday.

11 years old looks like loving Dude Perfect, learning trick shots, and trying things like balancing a balloon on a stick on your nose.

11 years old.

Challenging times as he walks the line between childhood and young adulthood. But fun times nonetheless.

Happy Birthday, My Son!

My oldest boy is turning 11!

He is all boy, full of energy and spunk.

He loves to be outside, whether biking or digging or climbing trees.

Happy birthday, son!

Son's Camp

 7/25/2018

My oldest son attended Farm Camp a few weeks ago. This is a day camp that is located less than 10 minutes from our house. This was my son's 3rd year of attending and he just LOVES it.

In this picture, he is in the driver's seat, surrounded by new friends he made at camp. He is super social and makes friends easily. Because he has attended this camp previously, he knows some of the kids already. Although he sees them for only this one week each year, he considers them good friends.

This camp takes a relaxed approach, just letting the kids enjoy the farm at their own pace. They can help care for animals or climb trees or take a hike or swim in the pond. It's the best week of the year for my outdoorsy boy!

Christmas - My Oldest Boy

1/9/2018

Here's a Christmas 2017 snapshot from my oldest boy's perspective.

His favorite part has to be SNOW!
He loves to play outside in snow for hours on end, if we'll let him. In our front yard, he and his older sister built a large hill for sledding/snowboarding down. So fun for them!

Here he is with some of his gifts - a dinosaur 3D puzzle, a fidget cube, a Lego block clock, a new bathrobe and Jonathan Park CDs.

Here he is with one of his favorite gifts - new walkie talkies!

After hosting the Indiana relatives for Christmas, this boy decided to finish off the leftover punch! :-)

We enjoyed time with Grandma K in Wisconsin, which includes Christmas headgear for all!

Here are a few of the boys on the Wisconsin side of the family. 4 were missing from this picture! And of the 4 that are included, 3 are my boys! Handsome fellas!

Opening up Christmas gifts from Grandma K.

A piggyback ride from Uncle Brian.
Great smiles!

He and his older sister spent a few extra days in Wisconsin with Grandpa K.

He had a very fun holiday season.
Merry Christmas, Buckaroo!

10 Year Old Birthday Boy

12/6/2017

This boy is now 10 years old!

Going from 9 years old to 10 has meant learning how to rip-stick, memorizing states and capitals as well as multiplication facts, earning permission to go for bike rides around the block by himself, and his first trip to the Emergency Room for stitches.

He's into things like paper airplanes. But his favorite thing to do is WORK! He loves to work with Dad on projects around the house or in the yard. He also loves to play outside with friends. He has two neighbor boys - Christopher and Sheldon - who are his best buddies.

So handsome!

We celebrated with an ice cream cake at his request. We included a birthday party with our Thanksgiving celebration with extended family 2 weeks ago.

He's into Legos these days, as well as loving anything and everything that is remote-controlled.

He loved this car he got for his birthday.

Happy Birthday, my boy! Welcome to double-digits!
We thank God for your life and are trusting Him for your future.

Neighbors and a visit to the ER

10/26/2017

We had a milestone this week: our family's first visit to the Emergency Room! My oldest son (age 9) was whacking at a root in the backyard, using a shovel. He ended up hitting himself on the head and required 2 stitches to sew up the wound. It was a bloody mess for the first 10 minutes, but we remained cool, calm and collected. I was proud of myself for that! (When I was a child, I HATED the sight of blood and would run the other direction, so I've come a LONG WAY since then).

As it turns out... our friend Liz (sister of our nextdoor neighbor Sarah) was working in the ER at that time. She is a Child Life Specialist. Her job is to entertain kids who come into the ER, to keep them calm, distract them and help them know what to expect. So she was there as one of the first faces my son saw when he arrived at the ER. And she loaded him up with so many toys and goodies that he changed his tune from "a scary visit to the ER" to "that was fun because I got toys!" Liz is great with kids. She's babysit our kids on a few occasions. And she has a therapy dog with her in the ER too. All of this makes her great at her job and I'm so glad she was working when my son paid her a visit!

Hopefully there won't be any more ER visits, but if there are, we made these "notes to self."  Remember to take some reading material, as the wait time is long. Also remember to grab some snacks to eat. My son injured himself at 5:15 pm, right before supper. So when he and my hubby took off to the ER, neither had time to eat. And they didn't return home from the ER until after 9:00 pm... and still hadn't eaten.

We are thankful to our Heavenly Father for sparing our son's life in what could've been a much worse situation. And we thank Him for medical care that is so readily available and for little things, like friends on duty in the ER, to remind us of His tender mercies and care. Thank you, God!

PS: Thinking about Liz and the fact that her family is moving this week, made me track down a few pictures of Liz with my kids over the years.

This is Liz with my son in 2011 - same boy that she'd be helping in the ER in 2017.

Liz was the best babysitter ever. Here she was playing in the backyard with my two oldest kids. She was always game for playing whatever crazy games they thought up.

This is Liz with my 2013 baby girl.

And here she is with my 2015 baby boy... and the rest of the gang.

Liz moved away from our neighborhood a few years ago. She lives at an apartment complex with a pool, so once or twice we visited her so the kids could enjoy her company and her pool!

Not sure how often we'll get to see Liz now... but I do hope those future visits will NOT be in the ER! :-)

Outdoors Boy

6/12/2017

My oldest boy - age 9 - loves the outdoors. In fact, this week he's participating in a farm camp, spending 6 hours a day doing outdoorsy, nature things. He loves climbing trees, playing in the pond, taking nature hikes, etc.

And if that isn't enough, he comes home from farm camp and immediately asks "Can I play outside?" :-)

Here he was with a "friend" he found in our own yard. Bugs don't bother this boy. Too much sun... no problem (he tans easily and rarely burns). He is in his element these days.

Happy summer from the great outdoors!
